Community Forum Notes: July 2016

In July, Bloomfield Development Corporation held a Community Forum to share updates with the Bloomfield community. Speakers included members of Bloomfield Development Corporation and a resident updating a new home construction in the neighborhood. see the notes below.

6:40 Community Updates- Christina Howell & Josh Rolon

  • New staff: Josh Rolon, the new community coordinator for Bloomfield Development Corporation, gave an overview of his new role as a liaison to the community to help connect residents to resources and advocate for their needs. Josh also said that he would be leading the Reimagining Bloomfield initiaitve.
  • Reimagining Bloomfield Initiative- collaboration with Pittsburgh Community Reinvestment Group to collect data on housing in Bloomfield and channel home repair resources to homeowners
  • Sign Island Stewardship- sign has been painted and metal pieces are being sandblasted and will be replaced soon
  • Streetscape Demonstration Project
  • Civic Leadership Academy Applications Open- Due August 5th. A resident also brought up that the Public Safety 12 week course through the City was very valuable in learning about how Fire/EMS/Police operate.
  • Zone 5 Town Hall Meeting 8/25 at 6pm

EECM- Zone 5 commander said that space is filled for the event, but please share any public safety concerns at josh@bloomfieldnow.org or call 412-681-8800.

6:50 Questions/Open Comment Period

  • Resident pointed out that Lima Way is very bad shape, full of potholes. Looking for help to reach out to the City to request filling potholes and repave street.
  • Events
    • Bloomfield Livable Streets July 26, Aug 23 6pm at East End Book Exchange
    • Bloomfield Music Festival July 28 held by Bloomfield Little Italy Day’s organizer Sal Richetti 6:30
    • BDC’s Garbage Gladiators volunteers will have a litter pick up Aug 27, 10a please join!
    • Brent from Councilwoman Gross’s office announced an Housing Opportunity Fund Public Hearing for Sept 21 at 5:30p in the City-County building (414 Grant St, 5th floor). This is a public hearing to get feedback on the recommendation by the Task Force for the City to create a fund to help pay for affordable housing projects
  • Business district changes
    • Former Del’s restaurant will be occupied by a family-friendly smoked fish and meat restaurant. Parking is the same arrangement as Del’s
    • East End Book Exchange is under new ownership and will be redesigning the interior of the store
    • Other vacant properties were discussed, but no information was available yet
